UMTS stick in debwrt

I am trying to install a UMTS stick, but I am having problems while trying to use the udb_modeswitch tool. I get a FATAL error when I execute the command "modprobe option". Why doesn't it work? Must I recompile the kernel?

ok, I've been working a little more on this thing, and i have found out that the modules that come with the kernel are compiled for the kernel version (vermagic parameter), actually not all of them, but at least "option" and "usbserial" module yes, but the kernel version of debwrt release is Then when I try to install a module using insmod, i get the message "Invalid module format". How can I fix this?

comment:2 follow-up: Changed 10 years ago by amain

please compile your UMTS modules against the compiled debwrt kernel. See DebWrtSvn how to compile your own DebWrt firmware. This will deliver you as well with a kernel headers debian package with the right kernel version. You can use de DebWrt cross compile environment to cross compile your modules, or you compile them on your device running debwrt, if size and speed allows. Please let us know if you succeeded.

I am going to try it but I still have a question. I've ran the "make menuconfig" command but it seems that the firmware is developed for a "brcm47xx" device but I have a "RouterStation Pro" (it means "ar71xx"), I don't know if this is going to be a problem or it is just so.

I've found another problem. I managed to compile the kernel, but when I try to create the root filesystem I get the following output (I put only the beginning and the end because I think there are the errors, if you need the rest just tell me):

debian:/home/user/Desktop/debwrt# make debian/rootfs
mkdir -p /home/user/Desktop/debwrt/build/debian-brcm47xx-Broadcom-b43-squeeze
# Due to various bugs in debootstrap in combination with fakechroot it is not
# possible to create a fakechroot here - and therefore we need to use chroot
# with sudo
#fakeroot fakechroot debootstrap
sudo debootstrap --include="file,less,strace,sudo" \
					    squeeze \
						/home/user/Desktop/debwrt/build/debian-brcm47xx-Broadcom-b43-squeeze \

Hit squeeze Release.gpg
Ign squeeze/main Translation-en
Hit squeeze Release
Hit squeeze/main Sources
Hit squeeze/main i386 Packages

sudo chroot /home/user/Desktop/debwrt/build/debian-brcm47xx-Broadcom-b43-squeeze groupadd -g 0 debwrt

Hi, after trying it for a long time, I realized that I was typing sudo before the make command and that was obviously the reason why the command failed. It was obviously my fault but I suggest you to clarify a little more this aspect in the instructions because it misleads, even more if you are not use to compile in linux.
Now I start with the big thing. I'll let you know if I succeed

Ok, Now I come back to the first problem I had. It seems there is no firmware image for RouterStation Pro. After compiling the kernel, in the bin folder there should be the firmware for my device. If I list this folder I get the following output

user@debian:~/Desktop/debwrt/bin/brcm47xx-angel-2.0-1-default$ ls

So, no file seems to be for rspro. What should I do now?

Probably you selected brcm47xx target in make menuconfig (which is the default). You have to selectr ar7xxx and as sub target rs pro.

You are right, i thought that it wasn't possible to do that. Ok now I'm running into another problem. I've flashed the kernel and saved the rootfs in the SD-Card, so my next step is "Root filesystem creation: Stage 2" I connect the UTP cable to the router and ping to (and 1.20 too), I also connect the serial cable and open a terminal. So, the ping doesn't respond and in the terminal I see the following message

sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 7744512 512-byte logical blocks: (3.96 GB/3.69 GiB)
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off

EXT3-fs (sda1): mounted filesystem with writeback data mode
VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly on device 8:1.

INIT: version 2.88 booting
INIT: Entering runlevel: 2
INIT: Id "T0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel

I've checked the /etc/inittab in the SD-Card and it seems to be right. I've also tried with another image for the SD-Card downloaded from and though it shows some problems loading modules (due to the different kernel version), I can log in and work with it.
Any idea?
